Our preferred curtain length is what we call “kissing the floor”, where the hem lightly touches the floor by around 2–3 cm. This gives a tailored finish without the curtain appearing too short. For relaxed interiors or lightweight fabrics, a puddle length (where the fabric pools slightly on the floor by around 4–6 cm) can create a softer look. We wove the retreat’s brand colours of sage and plum softly through the room — in upholstery, cushions and lighting — creating a gentle harmony that feels both grounding and uplifting. The built-in bookcase behind the sofa was already part of the home, so we kept and styled it, allowing the space to feel familiar and lived-in rather than newly made. We kept the existing kitchen units, restoring rather than replacing, and brought new character through a reclaimed pallet-wood plinth, rustic timber handles and a splashback of softly glazed, brand-green tiles. The long dining table extends to seat up to twenty, creating room for the whole group to eat together when the retreat is fully booked. In the other, strings of fairy lights drape across the ceiling, giving the room a gentle, starry glow. We kept the existing bed and bedside tables, allowing their familiar warmth to remain, and layered in soft textiles, natural tones and gentle lighting to create a peaceful haven for guests. The small lobby space beside the room, separated by the original glass block wall, became the perfect wardrobe and dressing nook - a quiet transition zone that adds privacy and a sense of retreat within the retreat. The fluted oak vanity unit was custom made. Hidden just out of view is a stylish built-in joinery cupboard that houses the washing machine and tumble dryer as well as useful laundry equipment. In the en-suite bathroom, we opted for traditional and timeless subway tiles in charcoal grey, with a contemporary twist - our bespoke fluted wood vanity unit with a recycled marble and stone terrazzo basin, a crittall style shower screen and wall lights from Buster & Punch. At the far end of the hall, a beautifully crafted wine wall adds a refined punctuation mark to this level’s palette of oak, concrete, and soft white. It’s a basement that doesn’t feel like one—an integrated extension of the home’s warmth and rhythm.
